Diocesan/Sponsoring Agency Libraries
The diocese or other agency that sponsors a student’s learning group maintains a library of books for students to use. The texts contained in the library are those listed on each course’s bibliography which is included in the syllabus for each course. Students may contact their group facilitator or local administrative liaison for access to materials contained in the professional reading library or for information concerning access privileges to a library in your area.
Online Library Catalog
Students may search the Loyola Library catalog which contains a list of all the books, journals, and other materials. To search for articles, refer to the section below about Online Databases. If you are beginning your research early enough to have the librarians send you a book through the U.S. mail or want to see if an e-book is available for your topic, search the library’s catalog by clicking on the link below
http://canisius.loyno.edu/uhtbin/cgisirsi/0/x/x/60/502/X>
If you find a book you would like, note the author(s), title, and call number. See the section below on Checking out Books for information on how to request the text be sent to you.
E-books are viewed online. You do not need to create a Net Library account to view e-books, but you will be asked to log in with your Loyola username and password to view the e-book. Information about accesing e-books can be found here: http//library.loyno.edu/research/ebooks.pdf.
Online Databases
A student must have a Loyola user name and password in order to access the databases. To log in to library resources, use your Loyola email username and password. The username is the first part of your email address. For example, if your email address is stiggy@loyno.edu, your username is stiggy. If you haven't changed your password, it should still be set at the default, which is a six digit number consisting of your birth year (4 digits) followed by your birth month (2 digits). For example, if you were born in May 1980, your default password would be 198005. If you do not know your Loyola e-mail address, you can find it in the Loyola directory, or you can find it in the "Personal Info" section of your LORA account.
To find articles by subject, you may search the library databases: some databases contain citation information only while others provide access to the full-text of the articles. You will find a list of subject areas for which Loyola has databases at http://www.library.loyno.edu/databases/index.htm. Click on the subject area you are interested in searching, and a list of databases will appear. Choose one and click on it. For example, under the heading “Arts and Humanities,” you might click on the link to “Religious Studies.” You’ll see an alphabetical list of database names. We suggest using Academic Search Premier, Catholic Periodical and Literature Index, Religious Periodicals, and the ATLA Religion Database. Once the database opens, you can type your search terms and start your research.
To see if the library has access to a particular journal, use Journal Finder (http://rosemont.exlibrisgroup.com:8332/V?func=find-ej-l). For example, to find out if the library has access to Christianity Today, type that into the search box on the Journal Finder page. Chrisitianity Today appears in the results list; click on the red S button to the right of the listing for Christianity Today. In the box that pops up, you'll see the different ways you can access this title. it is available onlinein several databases, and the library has a print subscription. To view it online, clikc the red Get it! button next to one of the database listings and you will be taken into one of the databases. More information about finding articles and using the Get it! button is available in this handout: http://library.loyno.edu/LI/handouts/introlib.pdf.
If you find citations for articles that are NOT available online, submit a request for the item through ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan system. Disregard the statement within ILLiad that items in the library's collection cannot be requested through ILLiad; this does not apply to distance learners.

The Loyola University Library provides Internet access to the library's online catalog, and to indexes to magazine and journal articles that may be useful to LIMEX students. To use these services, point your web browser to http://library.loyno.edu and begin searching. Distance Library Services can send LIMEX students up to five library books at a time. We can also email copies of articles and provide research assistance. There is no charge for these services, but students are expected to pick up the cost of mailing the books back to the library.
- Finding Books
The online catalog will help you find books, e-books, and other materials located in Loyola's library. Think of it as an electronic version of the traditional library card catalog. The online catalog does not require a password for off-campus use. If you find books that you would like to read, please submit your request through ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan system. Disregard the statement within ILLiad that items in the library's collection cannot be requested through ILLiad; this does not apply to distance learners. We can mail books to you. Do NOT use the catalog to find citations to magazine or journal articles (see the “Finding Articles” section below).
NOTE: The catalog contains records for many “e-books,” electronic books that are available online. You do not need to create a Net Library account to view e-books, but you will be asked to log in with your Loyola username and password to view the e-book. Information about accessing e-books can be found here. http://library.loyno.edu/research/ebooks.pdf.

Disregard the statement within ILLiad that items in the library's collection cannot be requested through ILLiad; this does not apply to distance learners.

If you don't know your Loyola e-mail address, you can find it in the Loyola directory, or you can find it in the "Personal Info" section of your LORA account. To log in to library resources, use your Loyola email username and password. The username is the first part of your email address. for example, if your emial address is stiggy@loyno.edu, your username is stiggy.
